The intense low that is the SW anchor of an Omega Block is the main wx maker in Alberta. As it mixes w/cold air from the N. high, heavy wet snow (10-15 cm) is expected in SW AB, wind gusts (up to 90 km/h) are poss. & rainfall accumulations in SE AB ranging from 50-100 mm. #abstorm

Widespread rainfall totals of 25-50 mm expected for east-central and southern regions. Rainfall warnings are out in the southeast for totals of 50-75 mm and locally 80+ mm. Precipitation moves out of the region on Wednesday. #abstorm

Precipitation is complicated. While moisture is needed in the “rainfall warned” areas in S.AB, recent precip. + the amt of forecast rain will likely prove to be TOO much as the ground becomes saturated (unable to absorb it all) = high potential for runoff/pooling/flash flooding.

Saw an email from Parks Canada today letting people know that the Bighorn Sheep are ready for pickup.

As expected the Fire Danger risk is ⬆️ as temps exceed seasonal norms & precip. remains mostly elusive. Pay attention to public alerts as wildfires can rapidly intensify.
Complicating matters is the “Spring Dip” a concept detailed by wx guru ⁦David Spence⁩ on his feed!😊

Despite recent moisture - which offered short-term gains - a large portion of our agricultural land (including in S.AB) remain in long-term drought. We are heading into our wettest season but moisture stores are vital, hence the increasing focus on reservoirs and water supply.

Remember this map, because in AB we are experiencing a rare moment of “low risk” in terms of Fire Danger.

These ratings are based on 3 criteria: 1. How easy it would be for a wildfire to ignite 2. How difficult it would be to extinguish a wildfire 3. Potential level of damage
