'Tile drainage, especially where wet soil conditions are prevalent, is a viable option to mitigate agricultural N2O emissions.' Gonna read this one! Nice work from Soil, Water, & Climate CFANS

we gotta talk about land drainage on some of the existing food productive agriculture land to enhance soil structure and avoid more land being farmed to make up for reducing yields

Tom Bradshaw Drainage is the building block of farming and giving cash for direct drills etc is great but pointless if the land needs draining…yield, productivity, sustainability all point in one direction ⬇️

Land drainage systems that were a key boost to productivity in the 70’s are now failing.

A key aspect of national food security is how we build resilience and replacing tiring infrastructure is a critical piece of the jigsaw!

The value of land drains to cereal crop productivity writ large. The good bits are lighter land, or over drains. The run off from the road shows beautifully along the left hand hedge. Soils are still so cold spring crops not even showing from the sky.

You may have noticed.

March was very wet.

Here’s some numbers around the wetness.

A 🧵

England saw around one and a half times normal rainfall, following a February which had over twice average amounts of rain.

It was the 9th successive wet month.

My updated 4 year rolling England rainfall anomaly chart.

Almost half of all months were pretty extreme (either less than 50% or more than 150% of normal rain).

More very wet months than dry. 3 months more than twice average rain.

It’s going to get more extreme.
