Cutting national insurance would benefit high-income households the most while doing nothing for those really struggling to make ends meet

Investing the same money in Universal Credit could lift 384,000 people out of poverty

Great to see this NEF analysis getting pick up today

Racial disparities in sanction decisions remain hidden

However, analysing how the JSA sanction system operated between 2012 and 2019 provides clear evidence of institutional racism & its geographic unevenness

Racial disparities v likely ongoing

Current rules force claimants to take any job that’s available, with no consideration of its financial viability, future prospects, or suitability to people’s needs. This leads to a race to the bottom in terms of quality of jobs on offer.

It was a huge privilege to speak at Unite the union: join a union parliamentary briefing on in-work conditionality yesterday

It is critical that support for working Universal Credit claimants is evidence-based and shaped by needs & experiences of workers, trade unions and employers

5 ideas:
1. Remove rule to take 'any job'.
2. Use job quality criteria to measure in-work progression.
3. Remove sanction threat from disadvantaged workers.
4. Match people with the right jobs.
5. Ensure employers offer good quality jobs.

And the good news is updating our social security system to support everyone, especially those who most need it, is entirely affordable.

Costs are far less than the £683 billion held by just 171 UK citizens, £480+ bn tax reliefs, £100 bn HS2, etc.

A welcome dip in the proportion of people on being sanctioned in new DWP stats today but still over double pre-pandemic rates, applied to a much larger group

We need a system that provides security & fosters engagement rather than leaning on threats & hardship

Well it's a sure sign an official report is worth a read when it's released on a bank holiday weekend.

DWP admit
'a sanction leads the average claimant to exit less quickly into PAYE
earnings and to earn less upon exiting'.

Nick Bailey explains in this excellent thread.
