🧵THE DEAL THAT NEVER WAS

How Russia sought to subjugate Ukraine, the West rightly refused to play the ball, and Putin became personally responsible for the failure of the Ukrainian-Russian talks

I'm alive, although according to all the laws of physics and probability I should have died. The positions, unfortunately, have been lost. Now I'm in the hospital with a concussion.

Soon I will ask you for help again, since in material terms our unit has lost a lot.

What we are now seeing in Ukraine is a result of delayed US military aid, lack of political will to mobilize enough manpower, and insufficient engineering (fortifications) in what was once rear areas. It's not just one and it's not just the other or the other. It's all three.

The U.S. supplemental has passed and aid is on the way to Ukrainian frontlines. But months of delay for ammo and manpower have come at a cost. Problems cannot easily be undone, especially in Donetsk. A brief thread on what Russian decisions say about their summer plans. 🧵

1/ Konrad Muzyka - Rochan Consulting has published an excellent if rather gloomy thread on the current situation in Ukraine. In the interests of helping it to reach a wider audience, I thought an English translation would be useful. twitter.com/konrad_muzyka/…

One reason why the West will have to invest more in further developing its weapons: Russia is currently gaining a lot of experience in countering them, and captured vehicles will certainly lead to more learning and adaptation in the long run.

I offer Keir Starmer some unsolicited advice. If Labour wins, he'll want to focus primarily on domestic priorities, promises and problems. But the international anarchic world will still bear down on the UK, & crises will erupt, so better to think hard about foreign policy now.

“Lots of people want to serve, they just don’t want to be assigned to a ‘meat brigade’,” he said, using soldier’s slang for units where “low level commanders and high level commanders don’t give a f*** about their people.”

This looks like a great initiative, the most efficient use of money for Ukraine is to support Ukraine's own underutilised defence industry!
