I see the old 'aitch'/'haitch' rubbish is starting again. Let's just live with them as alternatives. The origins lie in French 'hache'. English-speakers have gone two routes on this: think of 'hour' with no pronounced 'h' but 'habit' in which it's thought 'proper' to do the 'h'.

We tracked down a really good linguistic paper from Canada in the 1980s that has analysis of the phoneme /oo/. How many ways do you think this phoneme can be represented by letters in English?
