Donโ€™t get me started on โ€œstandard Englishโ€. Ian Cushing and Julia Snell are quite rightly calling out this linguistic bullying.

I see the old 'aitch'/'haitch' rubbish is starting again. Let's just live with them as alternatives. The origins lie in French 'hache'. English-speakers have gone two routes on this: think of 'hour' with no pronounced 'h' but 'habit' in which it's thought 'proper' to do the 'h'.

We tracked down a really good linguistic paper from Canada in the 1980s that has analysis of the phoneme /oo/. How many ways do you think this phoneme can be represented by letters in English?

With lots on Twitter at the moment about phonics and the question of reading pleasure, here's a really good blog about a balanced approach to reading by Charlotte Hacking of CLPE exploring how children can become both good *and* enthusiastic readers. clpe.org.uk/blog/reading-pโ€ฆ

On oracy, and the spurious, unhelpful dichotomies still circulating, this from me in a blog in 2021: 'Dialogic learning and instruction are not in opposition to each other, nor do teachers have to choose between them.' & another in 2017 (extract below).

KS1 Sats: The DfE may have now made the Year 2 tests optional, but excl polling by Teacher Tapp for Tes shows that over half of schools will still run them.

We spoke to those on both sides of the debate ahead of the delivery of govt papers next week:

Why are 10- and 11-year-olds spending their time at school cramming for SATs tests?

Because the current system is unfair and doesnโ€™t encourage love of learning โžก๏ธ tinyurl.com/manifestomp

Perhaps the better analogy is the teacher as the conductor and sometimes the composer. I speak as someone who has done all of these things - yes including conducting opera.
