The Australian government should include human rights vetting provisions in all bilateral security force cooperation agreements. The proposed agreement between Australia and Fiji for defence cooperation is a good opportunity to set this precedent Human Rights Watch hrw.org/news/2024/04/2…

The Australian government should withdraw a proposed law that would allow the authorities to seek prison terms for asylum seekers for exercising their right not to be sent to a country where they fear being persecuted. @annabelhennessy @HRW Daniela Gavshon

I'm also sick of this line about human rights being framed as a point of difference. We can disagree about what foods we like to eat. But human rights are non-negotiable - they are guaranteed under international law - that's the whole point.

In armed conflict, civilian harm must be the exception, not the rule. That's the core of international humanitarian law. All states have a stake in respect for in the war in Gaza, and in all other wars, because it is about preserving our humanity. ms.spr.ly/6013c5nGv

On human rights, ASEAN is woefully inadequate & impotent. The ASEAN-Australia summit in Melbourne is an opportunity to put democratic backsliding & the rights of southeast Asian people, front & center. My piece in Canberra Times canberratimes.com.au/story/8544294/…

Human rights violations in the Philippines remain rampant. Drug-related killings implicating the police have continued under Marcos, if at a lower rate.

“Philippines & Australia emphasised the importance of observing & promoting the rules based order governed by international law & informed by the principles of equity and of justice.” said 🇵🇭 President Marcos in Canberra.

So does that extend to the ICC?
