Epiphany term = DONE! What a term that was, I think the the hardest one I’ve ever worked, but there were some great moments too! I’m most pleased with how much fun I had with the students in my Pompeii and Advanced Latin modules, they were an absolute joy.

But for now: GIN.

I’ll be talking at the Durham Classics and Ancient History event Women’s Winged Words later on, about the Inspirational Figure in the (epigraphic) Field: Joyce Reynolds! Can’t wait to celebrate her work and legacy, and to introduce our audience to the wonderful world of Libyan epigraphy.

Spending the afternoon with some of our brilliant Durham Classics and Ancient History students at the Women’s Winged Words event for ! Listening to some really interesting work they’ve been doing on female voices in antiquity and am hugely comforted that these people are the future!

My Pompeii module has a Visual Reconstruction component of the assessment that I was quite nervous about the student reaction to. Marking their plans for their projects now, and I needn't have worried - they are so original and clever and well-researched, a delight to read!

Do any of my contacts here have a copy of Hugh Lindsay's commentary on the Life of Tiberius that I could beg some scanned pages from?

The sun is shining, January is nearly over and my Advanced Latin students were really fun (and clever) today. And there's a departmental pizza party tomorrow! Yes, there is LOADS of marking to do & no time to get to my research, but otherwise this is shaping up to be a good week.

What. A. Week. A PhD viva, all the teaching, all the committees, a broken laptop and 3 mornings at my desk by 7.30am. At least it’s the weekend and I can rela…oh, hang on. There’s marking, teaching prep, reports to write, a laptop to fix and…oh, articles to write! For now, GIN.

I just had the pleasure of examining a really excellent PhD thesis. Really interesting discussion in the viva and an excellently produced piece of research. This is one of the days that I really love my job!

First class of Epiphany term in the bag! Going on a Germanicus-shaped adventure with my Advanced Latin students this term, including some inscriptions to counterbalance all that literary history. Monday mornings are looking up!

Lovely time with my 3rd year Pompeii students today! We erupted Vesuvius & put our vulcanology hats on to think about pyroclastic flow deposits & archaeology. Such good fun, even at 9am! Now to deal with emails, some Libyan epigraphy & workshop plans with Institute of Classical Studies (ICS)!
