There have been more deadly incidents on French shores last year due to the UK & France’s new deal to stop the boats. Today’s events clearly show how fewer boats have led to dangerously overcrowded departures and how increased police violence on the beaches creates deadly panic.

Those who died are reported not to have drowned but to have been crushed under the weight of the more than 110 people who boarded a dinghy attempting to leave for the UK. The disaster took place in the context of a panicked departure under tear gas fired by police on the beach.

Let's keep talking about Ibrahima, a young person from Senegal who was sentenced to 9.5 years imprisonment a few weeks ago.

He steered a dinghy across the Channel to seek safety for himself and others. For many, this is the only way to arrive to claim asylum.

Not enough people know about Ibrahima. As a child he wanted to claim asylum in the U.K. he didn’t have the money to pay smugglers. They did him a deal, tiller the boat - travel for free. That way if anything goes wrong smugglers don’t die or get arrested - not even on the boat.
