When it comes to changing behavior, there is no substitute for relationships between educators and students. Tickets, stickers, candy and 'tiger bucks' can't replace relationships. I'm not saying never to use those things, but they are not the foundation.

There is a big difference between being firm and mean. It is possible to be one without the other. Be firm. Don't be mean. Kids respect firm. They might not like it, but they respect it. Mean often makes them want to quit.

One of my favorite ways to build culture is to reward everyone in honor of one. 'Because Jenny had such a great week, all of you get 10 extra minutes of recess in her honor. Thank her not me.' This can be done school wide!

-Believe success is possible

-Are given responsibility
- Look forward to allowed moments of joy & laughter each day

3. Competence (can't do the work)
4 .Belonging (doesn't fit in)
5. Awareness (literally unaware of their misbehavior)

All of us remove something from class every day. Rhetorical question to ask: Do I kick out the kid(s) because he’s in the way of the content, or do I kick out the content bc it’s in the way of those kids? twitter s
