⬇ Giant pedigrees connect 100s of ancient genomes from the early Medieval Awars of the Carpathian basin. Strictly patrilineal and avoiding any consanguinity whatsoever! It's mind-boggling what new insights into past social organization aDNA can create 🤯💀🧬

In our new preprint we propose that the likely route connecting Anatolian speakers with the Yamnaya (and thus with the speakers of Indo-European languages) is from the east. This thread summarizes different arguments for this hypothesis, as well as the alternative (from the west)

I’ve learned in aDNA that the higher your expectation the next paper related to a topic - say the origin of Indo-European languages - will go a long way towards resolving it, the greater the likelihood it will just make it even more complicated.
