Stonehenge was built in several stages: the first monument was an early henge monument, built about 5,000 years ago, and the unique stone circle was erected in the late Neolithic period about 2500 BC. In the early Bronze Age many burial mounds were built nearby.

A superb exhibition of photography by Ernest Farmer is currently on display at Wiltshire Museum.

In the early 1890s Farmer created a photo album containing 111 views of Wiltshire, Dorset and Somerset - including this shot of Stonehenge from the East.

Wonderful to welcome Sarum Morris, Lyme Morris and Fleur de Lys to Stonehenge.

The earliest known record of Morris dancing is from 1448. However, it wasn’t until 1939 that these traditional folk dancers were recorded at Stonehenge - but that's not to say they didn’t come before!

Imagine how people lived 4,500 years ago when you explore our Neolithic Houses. 🛖 🔥

They're based on evidence of a settlement at Durrington Walls, near Stonehenge. It was inhabited for about 50-100 years in around 2,500 BC.

Looking up at a Stonehenge trilithon! The formation of three stones (two uprights capped by a horizontal stone) has made Stonehenge a powerful symbol of Stone Age ingenuity.

Did you know, the word trilithon derives from the Greek for ‘three stones’?

This diagram by Inigo Jones (1725) shows an imagined view of the completed monument. Jones was convinced that Stonehenge was built by the Romans due to its geometry and symmetry, so he added another central trilithon to his reconstruction.

The Slaughter Stone gets its gruesome name from the red-coloured rainwater collecting on its surface and the over-active imagination of the Victorians. It originally stood upright at the entrance to Stonehenge and was flanked by additional stones that are now missing.
