the programming model and the execution models of massively parallel/accelerated systems are tied at the hip (didn't intend to get RocM fans excited 😉).

Until you match the execution model of a CUDA GPU, it is frustrating experience to get performance.

So Microsoft BUILD is a developer event and I’ve been talking and meeting a ton of devs. It really does seem that the friction of porting software from x86 to Arm in data center and client has drastically gone down. This may be a non issue entirely in the next few years.

Thinking about hyper-scaler custom AI accelerators: This is not a perfect analogy, but it is close, they are basically large NPUs.

Microsoft’s AI Recall explained:

The battle for AI developers continues to heat up with Windows now in the hunt.

On stage Pavan Davuluri called out Cephable latest software enhancements that harness the NPU on Copilot + PCs. We highlighted Cephable in our NPU report as they validated the importance of using the NPU for specific workloads.

Something I don't see many point out, but the usefulness of an AI agent will be predicated on how deeply you are in that companies ecosystem.

This applies to Microsoft, Google, and Apple (whatever they will bring to market), etc.

Multimodal AI experiences are clearly the turning point for this to go mainstream. Once your computer can see, hear, and understand you and all you are doing on your devices, computing takes a leap forward in usefulness.

Microsoft’s cloud to client full stack solution may be the most robust in the industry.

TOPS is all the rage, but we admit it is not the best metric for real-world AI performance. That said, our NPU report included this section explaining TOPS better.

Big new coming from BUILD I think today. Hoping for updates to Cobalt and Maia in Microsoft's custom silicon strategy.

My other main takeaway from this event is how much more @micorosft is in control of the ecosystem. Windows is in the best place it's ever been.
