The 83 Durham Miners' Association lost in the disaster were laid to rest together, commemorated with a memorial garden and a communal grave. This site remains a poignant reminder of the human cost of coal.

It belonged to George Burnett who was lost on the Somme for four days in 1916. Before the war George worked in a chemical factory. After he'd been discharged in 1919 he worked at Barrow Colliery.
A new display on the mezzanine at Central Library kindly collated by Yvonne McEwan, focuses on the lives of the workers of the #PolkemmetColliery and their lost way of life when the mine was closed.
