Big day in health policy: the United States joins pretty much every other developed nation in negotiating drug prices.

New: Nonprofit health system Allina has stopped denying care to patients with debt, two months after Jessica Silver-Greenberg 🕵🏻‍♀️ and I wrote about the practice.

The health system still faces an investigation by AG Keith Ellison into its billing practices.

I know my 5-year-old son is mine because, when he wanted to play doctor this morning, the first toy he pulled out was his pretend wallet. 🤪

It's a great question. We know very little about how often health systems deny care because of unpaid bills.

The best resource I've seen on it is a KFF Health News investigation led by Noam Levey, which surveyed 500 hospitals. Found about 20% allow this.

Tremendous reporting by Sarah Kliff and Jessica Silver-Greenberg 🕵🏻‍♀️.

It’s not just Allina. I reported in Nov that Mayo Clinic also denies indebted patients care. I heard from many — one who couldn’t continue her chemo treatments. Mothers whose children couldn’t even see their doctors. 🧵
