Geesje Kwak was only 16 years old when Breitner painted her here.

The kimono was such a beloved subject for Breitner to paint that he made thirteen paintings of girls in kimonos, with Geesje as his primary model.

The Rijksmuseum re-opened its doors on 15 July 1945, after the end of World War II. The museum was mostly closed during the war, and the collection was evacuated. As many as 165,000 people visited the first exhibition 'Reunion with the Masters'.
