$9.3 billion surplus and almost every public school in Australia is underfunded, while enrolling the vast majority of the neediest & so most expensive to teach students. This is a long term disaster for this country.

There are good things in tonight's , but there are just worse things happening to Australians out there.

In this budget, fossil fuel subsidies dwarf renewable spending.

'They're not addressing the big problems,' says Richard Denniss.

As Richard Denniss says, budgets are about choices. Here’s one choice: the amount we spend on defence compared to what we spend on diplomacy. Probably worth thinking a bit more about what actually makes us safer.

For the sake of our children and grandchildren, we must listen less to fossil fuel lobbyists and more to climate scientists.

Looks like the climate finance Australia announced for the Pacific & Green Climate Fund at COP28 is coming mostly from existing funds.
i.e. It's not new $ and now something else doesn't get $.

The Australian Government is so confident that fossil fuel use is going to increase in Australia that they are actively budgeting for it.
Renewable energy...not so much.

Remember when the Minister for Climate Change Chris Bowen said the private sector had to 'go it alone' on carbon capture and storage?
(this doesn't include the leg/policy support the govt has already given to ccs since 2022)

I would have thought that funding environmental legal services would do more to 'protect Australia’s natural environment, ecosystems and biodiversity' than litter prevention. But maybe that's just me.

On Friday morning the Member for Macnamara told Patricia Karvelas and voters he was shocked Labor was backing gas beyond 2050.

This afternoon he voted *against* stopping Labor's gas expansion. There he is on the floor of the House... on the right.

Will he revise his statement?
