It has been exciting to engage with fellow educators on this topic and share best practices on edutopia. A sense of balanced accountability can help the mental health of everyone! 😃😃

Another article for edutopia about a SIMPLE late work policy that boosted morale and established boundaries for me and my students. To paraphrase one of my students 'in this class...you see us as people...and we see you too'. ☺️

One my favorite presentations that I did for NHAWLT! A valid one for those who teach language, and for educators in general!😃

Congrats Keira D'Amato on breaking the U.S. women’s half marathon record today! It’s awesome to be a part of this era of U.S. women’s distance running where records are continuously improving. Especially impressive considering your travel—enjoy the moment Keira 😊

I guess it is time to start prepping my presentation for NHAWLT! 🥰 Excited to see some friends there, and to make new ones. 😁

A great game to put our students' energy to good use during this time, while still working on language acquisition! 😃😃

Nothing warms my heart more than seeing my students excited about getting to color. Side note: they are high-school students. A reminder to us all that even adolescents need to play.😃

Q5: So for me, I feel fairly comfortable in doing this for the MOST part. HOWEVER, I would like students to help me design a unit in itself. Where they decide as a class what they want to learn over a period (big idea) and I help them break it down.

Q4: I think the obvious one is whether they have the maturity AND content knowledge to really make valid choices. My response with this is...start small and make the choices easier and low stakes. The students will pleasantly surprise you in what they eventually do choose.

Q3: Oh, I could write an article on this one! (I actually did 😜) BUT in short: I have students help design assessments, design/implement rubrics, and SOMETIMES even have them help me figure out tasks that could allow them to show what they learned.

Q2: Honestly, it creates greater buy-in, makes the time go faster with greater engagement, and ensures I meet my instructional goals. Using student choice leads to greater attention, better confidence, better performance on assessments, and overall...a more effective experience.

A1: I am a big believer in options. I like to have students do 'either/or' activities where they can either practice skills/content. I also try to regularly poll classes on what they prefer and certain review/practice activities may differ according to the class.
