Staff at Banksia Hill Detention Centre, along with our Goldfields Youth Justice team, are finalists in the Australasian Youth Justice Awards.

The team of 10 coordinated Day Release for a teenager in detention to attend TAFE for Animal Care studies.

Congratulations to our Goldfields Youth Justice team who have been named finalists in the Australasian Youth Justice Awards.

The team works tirelessly with the local community to keep children out of custody, resulting in a downward trend in the region’s youth offending stats.

Ten prisoners at Greenough Regional Prison have received training in scaffolding, working at heights, in confined spaces and operating a forklift.

Being job-ready will help them find employment after release, as well as open up work opportunities while still incarcerated.

A team of prisoners and staff from Pardelup Prison Farm have used their firefighting skills to support the Forest Hill Bush Fire Brigade in the Great Southern.

It was also the first time the prison’s new fire appliance was called into action.

With the help of our Education Team at Bunbury Regional Prison, a prisoner has completed his entire Business Studies degree - with Distinction.

It took eight years to complete through Charles Sturt University.

Education is an important step towards rehabilitation.

Prisoners from Casuarina have made nesting boxes for native wildlife as a summer school project.

The Darling Range Wildlife Shelter installed the 20 boxes, and they’re already occupied by feathered families and little marsupials.

Over Easter, our chooks at Karnet Prison Farm have been working hard.

Our Finance Team has done the maths… Our hens produce a cracking 1.3 million fresh eggs a year for use in all WA’s prisons. No yolk!

Dave worked as a bricklayer before making the change 7 years ago to become a Prison Officer.

Now, he’s retrained and joined our Special Operations Group (SOG).

Dave won the Superintendents Award on the training course.

In celebration of Harmony Day, a stunning mural has been unveiled at Eastern Goldfields Regional Prison which depicts scenes from around the world.

The piece took her about 18 months to complete, each square taking six to ten hours.

Our new Special Operations Group (SOG) recruit, Warena, says he joined because he wanted to challenge himself.

It took Warena a few attempts to pass the course, but he was determined to prove to his family he could achieve his goal.

A smoking ceremony marks a powerful step towards connecting detainees with culture and steering them to positive pathways.

Six Aboriginal Elders and leaders have been employed by the Department of Justice as mentors at Banksia Hill, to teach and support young people and staff.

A new Visitors Centre at Wooroloo Prison Farm has been proudly built almost entirely by prisoners.

The construction project has created a more welcoming environment to maintain contact with family and friends and taught the prisoners work-ready skills.

International Women’s Day raises awareness about gender inequality and celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. Over half of the Department’s workforce are women, and we are proud of the role they play delivering of Justice Services in WA.

In celebration of International Women’s Day, a former prisoner has returned to Bandyup Women’s Prison to inspire others and help them strive for a better future.

Section 95 Prisoners are assisting in major restorations of Jarrahdale’s Veteran’s Transitional Centre (VTC).

The VTC offers a haven for WA veterans and their families, offering accommodation and support to former servicemen and women.

The Department of Justice is trialling the Juno sound system in some prison classrooms to support prisoners who might have hearing loss, language or cognitive difficulties. More: wa.gov.au/government/ann…
