Every time I see a version of this chart posted I both want to share it and argue with it. Disaster deaths are not accelerating, and the world is better at protecting people than it was in the past. But there has not been any meaningful decline for four decades.

It takes 300 million barrels of oil everyday just to keep industrial civilization from collapsing. Totally unsustainable in terms of energy consumption and also the externalities that come from burning all that Carbon. A huge economic dip will either be managed or inevitable.
