A lot of the big existential fears about AI seem to boil down to basically “it will try to excel at tasks like maximizing profit or power even if that means people get hurt or exploited” and I keep thinking … don’t we already have that?

I hope we can remember that the primary reason to study origins of pandemics is to *help prevent future outbreaks.* With COVID the practical takeaway remains that if lab or zoonotic origin both plausibly could explain a virus like this, we need to improve systems to prevent both.
