If the world needs vaccines for people, we're definitely not starting from a standing start. Lots of preparatory work has been done, especially in the US. But this would be no easy task & equitable access would likely be a huge problem. statnews.com/2024/04/24/h5n…

The FTC’s ban on noncompetes is a BFD, especially for health care since so many physicians and other providers get forced into them. But litigation is almost certainly coming. Read Tara Bannow to understand the big picture, and fine print, of the ban. statnews.com/2024/04/23/ftc…

An incredible honor for STAT reporters.
'STAT made a difference in the lives of patients across the nation by having the courage to pursue such a difficult story and the compassion to help those who were so callously treated by the nation’s largest health insurer.''

“New noncompetes banned for all workers as of effective date.”

The FTC just issued a complete ban on all employee non-competes. No carveouts, no limitations, no exceptions.

Wow!

I really enjoyed this conversation with NPR's Marketplace on our investigation into the use of an algorithm to deny care to Medicare Advantage patients.

Very important result. Relieving debt is appealing because it is so tangible but this work suggests it may be too downstream or “too little too late” to be helpful.

Job update: Starting next week, I’ll be moving onto the biotech team at STAT. As a national biotech reporter, I’ll still be covering obesity, diabetes and heart drugs, but also many other drugs and the biopharma industry as a whole.

📢New paper alert! PE firms invest in physician practices to generate outsized returns on exit.

But what does exit look like? Over what timeline?

Measuring this activity has been difficult due to no transparency. My paper fills these gaps.

Medicare expects to spend $3.5 billion on the Alzheimer's treatment Leqembi in 2025 — well beyond what Wall Street or even the drug's manufacturer has projected. Read more from Rachel Cohrs Zhang and me: statnews.com/2024/04/11/med…

Physician payment reform is in the air.

So I wanted to share our paper about the Medicare Shared Savings Program.

We find that the MSSP has had virtually no budget impact for CMS.

ACOs are not the answer to cost containment in Traditional Medicare.

Hospitals must report charity care to the government and their investors / bondholders. But charity care numbers are not always the same — and in some cases are way off. Tara Bannow did some digging and found big inconsistencies at HCA and elsewhere. statnews.com/2024/04/08/hca…
