World’s top climate scientists expect global heating to blast past 1.5C target

The The Guardian have just published a poll of IPCC scientists by Damian Carrington, showing almost 80% of respondents expect we'll cause a disastrous level of warming of >2.5C

This fits with other recent studies into scientists views, here's a🧵summarising some key results…

With four months of data now in from ERA5, we see a roughly 66% chance that 2024 will surpass 2023 as the warmest year on record – and a >99% chance it will be one of the top-two warmest years.

The current best-estimate is that 2024 will come it at just above 1.5C:
