Let us settle it in our minds that saints on earth are not perfect angels, but only converted sinners.

They are sinners renewed, changed, sanctified, no doubt, but they are yet sinners and will be till they die .

—JC Ryle, Daily Readings from all Four Gospels, John 11:17-32

Many [saints] conceive amiss of God, and draw an ill picture of him in their minds, as if he were hard to be pleased, always frowning.

The sun doth not more naturally shine, nor fire more naturally burn, nor water more naturally flow, than acts of grace and goodness naturally flow from God.

To be saved is to be 𝘪𝘯 𝘊𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵; not simply to believe his teaching, but to be in him, and to be a sharer in his life, in his death, in his burial, in his resurrection, in his ascension.

Our Lord did not come to tell us what we have to do in order to save ourselves; He came to save us.

Isn’t this encouraging?

“Remember this, he that does 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 (seeks to resist and battle hidden sinful motions as they arise) does 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 than the most glistering and blustering hypocrite in the world does.”

—Puritan Thomas Brooks, Works 1:88

Christ by his death reconciling God to man, did not alter the will of God, but did what was in accordance to His eternal will; He came not to change His will, but to execute His will: “Behold, I come to do thy will, O God (Hebrews 10:7).”

Remember Christ’s design was ‘to take away sin’, not to take away obedience.

To the despairing backslider:

“To cure this raging despair, consider, if you have but a mind to return from your great and infamous sins, the Lord is 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘺 to receive and pardon than you can be to return.”

In years of street evangelism I can count on 1 hand the people who immediately asked me “what must I do to be saved?”

This is why we must use the Law. We must define sin. We tend to assume man believes he’s too bad for the gospel, when really he believes he’s too good for it.
