The massacre in Rafah was so obviously criminal that Israel has felt pressure to announce an “investigation.”

Reminder: these self-investigations are meaningless. Among the 1,260 complaints from 2017-21, only 11 resulted in indictments — fewer than 1%.

Horrified at reports from Rafah that Israel has shelled tents where refugees were sheltering, in areas they were told were safe zones. Multiple casualties, with an untold number of people still trapped in their burning tents.

I'm amazed by the steadfastness and refusal to surrender of the health care workers who made this possible. Wow.

Orders:

Israel must immediately halt military offensive that could bring about group destruction in whole or in part. (exact wording soon)

Israel must allow UN-mandated investigators.

Israel must report back within one month.

Some feedback, frankly, was just rude and offensive, which is unfortunately nothing new to anyone who speaks publicly on Palestine. Others prop up an artificial concept of “balance” which is often used to obscure reality in social justice issues.

We worked hard to write the policy. Unfortunately, many of the public comments received about the policy contain misinformation (like that Gaza is not occupied, which is false). Others repeated the same tired arguments Palestinians and allies have heard for decades.

While we kind of expected this, we hoped to build on the momentum of our ceasefire policy from Nov 2023, which, after a contentious debate, passed with 90% of the vote (context: medpagetoday.com/publichealthpo…)

As co-chair of the Palestine Health Justice Working Group of APHA, we are disappointed to report that our Palestine health justice policy proposed for the 2024 annual meeting has just been voted down by the policy committee and will not be up for a vote next October.
