@ScrutinEye has Essex’s number. This is the most succinct and spot-on analysis of Robert Devereux that I have read.

I’d also like to add that I am only 110 pages into his truly excellent and brilliantly balanced Essex and Elizabeth and I’ve already got 102 highlights.

At last, I’ve updated my website. 🎉 Feel free to check out this article: “Mary King of Scots”.

How did Mary dress, marry and try to govern Scotland as a man? Why did her “kingship” fail? Why don’t we talk about her performing gender?

Enjoy!👇🏼

Not shocked she didn’t thank Mary though and (similar to Elizabeth) Mary didn’t finally name her firm successor until almost the last second. Until then, Mary made it clear she did not want Elizabeth to succeed, seeking avenues to try and prevent it.

Oh, the 1520s. In December 1522, Erasmus wrote to Bishop Fisher, saying he was

“much troubled by a cough and the stone; still more by the incessant attacks made upon him by dunces.”

Even when sickly he could be savage.

Finally have a physical copy of this masterpiece. These past six months has been a deep dive into the life of this fascinating monarch. Thank you @ScrutinEye for this great gift and for rehabilitating James’ reputation:)

In December 1612, most at court were looking ahead to Princess Elizabeth’s marriage to the Elector Palatine.

Unfortunately, “Sir Thomas Lake, at the affiancing, translated the service into French so badly as to excite laughter”.

Comme c'est gênant!

Fascinating read particularly pertinent to today's relationship between Scotland and England. Excellent reassessment of the flawed King James VI/I in a very accessible narrative

Henry VIII was in no mood for beggars in 1535:

“A valiant beggar, or sturdy vagabond, shall at the first be whipped … and if he continue his roguish life, he shall have the upper part of the gristle of his right ear cut off.”

What a period to !
