I listened this AM ... I share concerns about states requiring particular programs.

'a) why all teachers should feel empowered to accelerate the learning of students w/ dyslexia & DLD; b) what dyslexia & DLD are; c) why these disabilities are so misunderstood; & d) how educators can accelerate word recogn. & language comprehension develop. through instruction.'

Hundreds of millions of dollars spent and then the leaders went directly against the clear findings. Flabbergasted.

This fantastic article by Young-Suk Kim and Elizabeth Zagata made its way to my inbox yesterday. It is 1 to share & bookmark! The authors discuss not only the relations b/t reading & writing, but also outline 3 key principles for implementing integrated reading & writing instruction.

I like the 'alphabetic coding' term. Students don't need phonemic awareness or letter names or phonics or sight words as much as they need the alphabetic principle and phonological decoding skill.
