Spare just 2 minutes of your time please.
What we had to what we have in May 2024.
Do not accept this as the new natural.
This is what complete failure to protect our rivers looks like. Nearly finished me

Road runoff enters rivers directly at highway outfalls. It also goes into combined sewage systems via drains. When sewage is discharged into rivers, as well as human waste, it may contain arsenic, heavy metals & PAHs from roads. A double hit for wildlife.

Lead was eliminated from petrol years ago but Stormwater Shepherds found it in road runoff at several sites. Even low levels of lead may harm tadpoles, frogs & fish. (Taddlers below are nowhere near a road.🐸)

Water companies in England have incurred debts of more than £64,000,000,000.

We won't get the water infrastructure we need with privatised water.

I have co-sponsored Early Day Motion 738, calling for English water companies to be brought under public control.

Nobody monitors highway outfalls - we just don't know how much road runoff there is. For sediment alone, (dust from road surfaces, tyres, exhaust, gears, brakes) National Highways estimates 2 tons per hectare is washed off roads each year - that's a lot of toxic sludge in rivers.

The Angling Trust is deeply frustrated with Defra's failure to meet crucial environmental targets, highlighting the disconnect between their ambitious plans & actual results. Anglers are witnessing the degradation of our waters, we need immediate, actions not more empty promises.

'I would therefore strongly advise residents not to enter the River Test and to keep domestic animals away from the water.'

It's come to this, the Test, the finest example of a chalk stream on the planet and people are being advised to stay away. 🤬 🤬🤬
