@JimPropp

I'm a professor at UMass Lowell. I write a monthly blog called Mathematical Enchantments (https://t.co/8oUk5ueVoN). Sometimes I’m facetious w/o using smileys.

Is there a video that provides intuition about why countable subsets of R (even dense ones) have outer measure zero, by zooming in on a cover of such a set by a union of countably many intervals?

I noticed a few hours ago that the illustrations for my “Jewish Mathematics?” essay had disappeared so I had to re-insert them. Have other Wordpress users had issues like this? (And has anyone noticed other Mathematical Enchantments essays of mine that are missing their figures?)

“But my real complaint about ‘If you see something, say something’ is that it fails to specify how what we *say* is supposed to relate to what we’ve *seen*. For instance, if I’ve witnessed a crime, would complimenting a police officer’s uniform count?”

My blurb for this month’s Mathematical Enchantments essay may have been misleading, so let me try a different hook: Is there such a thing as “Jewish mathematics”? (Re-asking that question with “Jewish” replaced by other identities is left as an exercise.) mathenchant.wordpress.com/2024/04/17/jew…

Nobody asked me to, but I've now written a hundred unpublished essays in and around mathematics and plan to write many more. Why am I doing this and what have I learned in the process? mathenchant.wordpress.com/2024/03/17/nin…

I’m 20 minutes into Dune (the 2021 movie) but I’m still hopeful that we’ll get a running gag with characters violently disagreeing with one another about the correct pronunciation of “Atreides”
