Miguel Cardona, US education secretary, at the Education Writers Association annual conference in Vegas:
I believe a lot of the issues that we've had on college campuses in recent months could have been prevented with good programs that support diversity, equity and inclusion.

U.S. Education Secretary Secretary Miguel Cardona getting some tough questions about the FAFSA disaster from Erica L. Green of the New York Times. He says his department is “acutely aware” of the problems but process is getting better.

Jesse would have been graduating high school with his classmates this year. Newtown High School recognized him with an honorary yearbook page.

Jesse left this world a better place than he found it. I am eternally proud of him.

Worth noting as Governor Jeff Landry says he wants students to be taught 'how to think, not what to think' — He's expected to sign a bill requiring the Ten Commandments to be displayed in every public school classroom. Bill's author said she wants kids to see 'what God’s law is.”

In the 11th hour of the longest school year of all time, Rebekah O’Dell and I got tired of explaining what plagiarism is to students. So, I made a decision tree. It’s helping our kiddos! Hope it helps yours too 😇

Since Tuesday, 2 HS seniors, 1 parent, 4 college counselors, 1 HS principal, and 2 college students I’ve never spoken with before have reached out to tell me that they/some of their students still can’t access or complete the FAFSA due to various technical problems. Oof.

HS senior who still can’t complete the FAFSA just told me: “If a different population of students — students who don’t look like me — were having this much of a problem just trying to get to college, you can bet there would be parents protesting outside Congress.”

THIS is such a key pt. Shortages have been getting so much attn recently b/c they've affected more privileged students. As shortages decline for more privileged students, we'll likely see declining public interest, even if they remain substantial in high-pov schools & special ed

Genesis and Karen Callero, recent immigrants from Ecuador, had already taken their graduation photos when they say their Brooklyn school pressured them to transfer. They weren't alone. A deeply reported piece from Michael Elsen-Rooney chalkbeat.org/newyork/2024/0…
