Did you know that ground squirrels have adapted special behaviors to fend off rattlesnakes? A 2008 study found that female ground squirrels will chew up rattlesnake sheds and spread the scent across their bodies as a form of predator defense. 📷: Jim Akers

Black Skimmers (Rynchops niger) are one of the most interesting birds here at Bolsa Chica with a longer lower mandible than the top. Until the end of August, Black Skimmers feed on the fish in the bay and sometimes nest at Bolsa Chica. PC: Shirley Kell

A Striped Shore Crab (Pachygrapsus crassipes), Horn snails (Cerithideopsis californica), and Ribbed Mussels (Mytilus californianus). All these animals keep the bay clean by eating small organic particles in the mud or in the water.

Spotlight: Luke M has interned with The Bolsa Chica Conservancy, primarily working in restoration, but also has spent time hosting at our interpretive center, leading volunteers, and conducting surveys. Luke has been a valuable team member, and we hope to see him back soon!
