I am shocked to read that Boris Johnson does not believe that habitually dishonest politicians should be prosecuted for criminal offences of dishonesty.

I am glad to live in a country where lawyers aren’t expected to go on TV to be interviewed about our losses.

The thing about criminals - in particular stupid, venal, lying, manipulative, racist, sex-offending, democracy-defying, corrupt, fraudulent criminals - is that they are seldom as clever or persuasive as they think they are.

And they eventually find that they can’t buy justice.

Sorry about your mum. But on the plus side that was the period you got to know me as chancellor.

You're still thinking about your mum, aren't you.

If you want to know what the next big public scandal is going to be, it's right here - the rotten Single Justice Procedure. Justice done on the cheap and behind closed doors which is leading to horrible injustices. (Chapeau to Tristan Kirk for doing so much to expose it) ⬇️

You have been a rare credit to this government. It’s a huge shame that many of your colleagues have not shared your sense of perspective. The Criminal Justice System at the minute, is truly knackered. That will be an enduring stain on this, and previous Conservative governments.

I suspect that only 1 in 100 criminal barristers and judges has a proper grasp of the 'prosecutor's fallacy,' and even fewer jurors. Important piece by Tom Chivers. unherd.com/2024/05/the-da…

No it's not. Cat 'abduction' is set to become a specific offence. It has a lower maximum sentence than cat theft, which remains a crime under the existing law. It will make no difference whatever to cats or their owners.

Punishing parents for the independent actions of their adult children would certainly be a novel development in our criminal law.

And one not without jeopardy for the parents of certain politicians.

'The criminal justice system is at the point of structural failure... The next government needs to step up to the plate,' says Bar Chair Sam Townend KC.

A dying breed in the current iteration of his party. Sir Bob Neill KC (Hon) MP has been tenacious in his defence of the justice system and the rule of law during his tenure as chair of the Justice Committee, despite the best efforts of his party to undermine it at every turn.

He will be missed.

Day 2 of the Campaign:

✅ Get caught lying to a grieving mother
✅ Refuse to pay up on a bet for charity
✅ Abandon your flagship anti-smoking policy and proudly tell journalists “this shows the type of Prime Minister I am.”

In 2019 there were 71 ineffective criminal trials because there weren’t enough lawyers to conduct them.

71 seemed a lot.

By 2023 that number was 1,436.

We warned everyone that legal aid lawyers were leaving.

And we were right.

We thank Sir Bob Neill KC (Hon) MP for his tireless,
rigorous and fair leadership in over nine years as Chair Justice Committee, alongside colleagues across all parties who have served on this vital committee, to ensure for UK Parliament and public that justice is both done and seen to be done.
