William Pickens (born in 1881 to formerly enslaved parents in South Carolina) was a Yale alum, author, educator, member of the NAACP & the US Department of the Treasury. His daughter Harriet Pickens became an officer in the US Navy in 1944.

Ernest Green, a member of the Little Rock Nine, became the first Black student to graduate from Little Rock’s Central High School with 600 white classmates #OTD in 1968.

Today we honor him and all the courageous students who desegregated their schools following #BrownvBoard .
